Revolutionary Car Launch: Our VR Journey with Suzuki Swift

The recent launch of the Suzuki Swift in the Netherlands was not just a car unveiling, but a revolutionary car launch. It combined advanced technology with an immersive driving experience. At Phil & Flo we created a 2-minute virtual reality (VR) experience that allowed participants to sit in the next generation Suzuki Swift and travel through different VR locations.

The VR Experience
Imagine that you are in the new Suzuki Swift, but instead of the event hall around you, you are transported to the “Catherdral Of Speed”: the TT circuit of Assen, or Beekse Bergen, surrounded by beautiful nature. This was the reality we created through our VR experience. With the help of the Insta 360 camera, we captured 8K footage for the highest level of detail. With the Pico 4 , a state-of-the-art VR headset, we developed an experience that is not only visually appealing, but also intuitive.

When designing the VR experience, we kept all types of users in mind: from those trying a VR headset for the first time, to seasoned tech enthusiasts. So we created a seamless and enjoyable journey for everyone present. Streamlining the process with Look & Play, a quick and easy 360° playback solution, made it hassle-free for users who get confused with controllers and menus. All users had to do was put on the headset. Not clicking buttons or other unknowns, but experiencing it directly.
Impact on those present
The response to the VR experience has been fantastic. More than 300 people attended the event at the National Military Museum in Utrecht , with many experiencing VR for the first time. The enthusiasm was great: participants explored virtual environments from the comfort of the driver and passenger seats of the Suzuki Swift. “It felt like I was really there, driving through the beautiful Dutch landscapes,” noted one participant. The responses underline the success of the event and the high-quality experience we created.

Mini-Interview with the 3D Designer
What were some of the challenges in creating this VR experience?
“What I found especially challenging in creating this VR project is working with high resolutions. A normal video is often small and a resolution of 1080p is often high enough. But for a 360 degree video, this image is of course placed all around you and higher resolutions are needed to make it appear sharp. For this project we worked in 8K resolution. That's actually 4 times the size of a 4K video . The difficult thing about working with 8K resolution is that it is difficult for the programs we work with. The render times therefore take longer, making it difficult to preview parts in between.”
Project Highlights:
What did you enjoy most about working on this project?
“The highlight for me is seeing how everything comes together. So the interior of the car and mirrors, but also the addition of music. And of course that the end product was well received by the visitors to the event.”
The future of VR:
Where do you see VR going in the next two years?
“It only gets better, the hardware gets better and more compact. Many software have already been given many more functions to work with VR content than 2 to 3 years ago. This only makes it easier to create a VR video or experience.”
The launch of the Suzuki Swift in the Netherlands was a testament to the power of VR in transforming traditional events into unforgettable experiences. At Phil & Flo we are proud to have contributed to this project and are excited about the future of VR technology . It was a lot of fun working with both Suzuki and The Merge Agency to carry out this work. We believe in the potential to revolutionize not just automotive showcases, but a wide range of industries and experiences.
