Wat is Photogrammetry?

Unveiling the World in 3D

Have you ever wondered how 3D models of buildings or landscapes are made? The answer lies in a fascinating technology called photogrammetry.

Photogrammetry is the creation of measurements and 3D models from photographs. You take multiple photos of an object from different angles. You then use clever software to stitch them together, reproducing the exact shape and dimensions of the object in the digital world.

Digital sculpting from photographs

There are two main types of photogrammetry:

  • Aerial photogrammetry: With this technique, photographs are taken from aeroplanes or drones. This is often used to create detailed maps and terrain models of large areas.
  • Terrestrial photogrammetry: With this technique, photographs are taken from the ground using handheld cameras or mounted rigs. It is ideal for creating 3D models of smaller objects, buildings, or cultural artefacts.

Photogrammetry has a wide range of applications, including:

  • Architecture and construction: Creating accurate 3D models of buildings and structures for renovation, restoration, or design purposes.
  • Archaeology and cultural heritage preservation: Documenting and preserving historical artefacts and sites in 3D. One example of this is the EU campaign “Twin it!”, which aims to create a pan-European collection of 3D-digitised heritage sites.
  • Film and video production: Developing realistic 3D environments and characters for films and games.
  • Environmental monitoring: Tracking changes in landscapes and ecosystems over time.

The rise of drones and powerful software

The rise of drones and advanced photogrammetry software has significantly increased the accessibility and applications of the field. Drone footage can capture subjects in high quality and from various angles; the software handles much of the process automatically, making the creation of 3D models faster and more efficient.

Photogrammetry in action: Supermarket range brought to life

At Phil & Flo, we recently used photogrammetry to create a series of 3D models of supermarket fruit and vegetables. Using these precise scans, we can now create vivid animations of this everyday range. The 3D models show the colours, textures, and shapes of each piece of fruit and vegetable in remarkable detail.
